Are You Running on Empty?
By Sharon Ball

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Are you running on empty? Going through day after day of what
feels like meaningless activities that take up all your time and
energy? Everywhere you look there is a fire that needs to be put
out? One demand after another from others? Do you feel that you
have lost the real you? Is your life full of “should” and “have
tos”?

Check out yourself talk and your underlying belief system. If
something goes wrong, do you automatically tell yourself you are
to blame? Do you tell yourself you are homely, stupid, fat, or
whatever negative description comes into your mind at the
moment? Do you believe you are not smart enough, deserving
enough or good enough for the “good things” in life? Do you tell
yourself and others how tired you are, how nothing is working
out, how everyone treats you badly, how life is not fair, how
stressed you are? If you do make a mistake, do you brood on how
awful you were? Do you assume the worse from any circumstance?
Do you frequently compare yourself to others and always come out
lacking?

Look carefully at your relationships or lack of relationships.
Do you have family and friends you supply you with unconditional
respect and love? Or do you live your life fearing disapproval
from those close to you? Are you lonely and believe that you are
never going to find that “soul mate” that will make your life
happy? Do you believe that you need someone or something else to
make you happy? Are you a people pleaser or are you able to be
who you truly are?

Is your home environment cluttered and messy instead of orderly
and serene? Does your "To Do" list have so many unfinished
projects on it that you’ll never complete them all even if you
live to be 150? Or do you operate without a “To Do” list and
have commitments stored in your brain where they are often
forgotten which causes even more stress for you? Are you plagued
by financial problems?

OK. Enough of this doom and gloom! It is time to take personal
responsibility for your life at this minute. Your choices and
the resulting actions you have made in the past have created
your life the way it is today. Only by changing your choices and
actions can you create a different life tomorrow. You do HAVE
THE POWER to create the life of your dreams- just plan your
choices instead of continuing to follow the path of least
resistance. Stop reacting to life and proactively go after the
life of YOUR dreams. Decide today that you are going to start
using your time in more meaningful ways that make a difference
in your life. Decide that you will stop blaming outside
influences and take 100% responsibility for how you are living
your life.

To begin creating a LIFE REINVENTION or LIFE MAKEOVER: do some
self discovery exercises and determine what your most important
values are. Family, career, a passion for art, having security
in the form of lots of money, being given the respect of others,
being honest and caring- what are your personal values? You can
find lists of 100s of potential values to choose from by
browsing on the web. Daydream about what activities would create
your ideal day. Just remember that you cannot design your dream
life until you understand what you truly value and what is most
important to you in life.

Do a life inventory in the areas of self, family, friends,
career, hobbies, finances, spiritual activities, health,
entertainment, and your home/environment. Feel free to add other
areas of your life to this inventory list. In your life
inventory determine all the things that are right with your life
(you are able to walk and talk, right) and what things need
change or improvement. The amount of change and improvement you
can achieve is directly related to the amount of effort and
commitment (maybe even some sacrifice) you are willing to put
forth. Accept that there are no shortcuts, no magic pill or
“secret” to achieving your dreams.

Make a list of what you need for your dream life. Do you need
to improve current relationships or find new relationships? Are
you looking for a specific type of person that would be your
“soul mate”? Will you need to change careers or improve where
you are in your current career/ do you need to learn better
financial management? Are there new skills you need to learn? Do
you need to pay off debts? Look for your dream house? Along with
each thing on your list for your dream life, determine what you
need to achieve it. To attract a certain type of person you need
to become the kind of a person they would be attracted to. To
improve your current relationships you might need to read some
books on relationships, see a marriage counselor or other
therapist or a life or relationship coach. For a different
career you might need more education. For your dream house you
might need to save some money for a down payment. You get the
idea.

You MUST write all this out. Trying to keep it all in your head
will not work. If you’re not willing to take the time to write
your plan out, you must not want it very badly. You cannot
change everything at once. So choose one area that you feel will
make the biggest difference in your life and start with that.
Start with the final result and write that as your goal. For
instance- I will climb the corporate ladder from stock boy to
assistant manager in one year. Then make a list of the steps
that will take you from where you are now to your goal. You may
have to do some research or get some help to determine exactly
what you need to know. You may have to learn some new skills
along the way. Keep your plan open to revision, most goal
setting plans need to be revised one you start your action plan.
As you move along your plan make note of what seems to be
working and what is now so that you can do more of what IS
working and less of what IS NOT working. You must write all this
down for it to make sense. When we write something down, both
our intuitive and creative right brain along with our logical
Dr. Spock left brain.

As you begin working your plan, you may find obstacles in the
form of negative reactions from other people or even from your
own fears. You must work on controlling negative self talk,
emotions and thoughts. The Law of Attraction says that whatever
you believe and think about will happen. So think positive
thoughts and turn off the negative thoughts. Find someone, maybe
a friend or a life coach, to help keep your motivation high.
When obstacles occur, tell yourself they are temporary and ask
yourself what lessons you can learn from them. Understand that
you will never be finished with your life makeover because each
time you successfully make one change to improve your life it
will be time to begin making another change.

Can Your Dog Live Peacefully With Your Cat?
By L.J.T. Reaves

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

A lot of people believe dogs and cats are mortal enemies. In
reality, they're not. They simply fit the mold of natural
predators. They can live peacefully under the same roof as long
as their owner takes the right approach in introducing them. In
fact, it's not uncommon for canines and cats to not only accept
each other, but enjoy each other's company. They essentially
become friends.

This article will explain why confrontations occur between
them. You'll discover the reason is intuitive to their
respective natures. We'll also provide a step-by-step plan to
help you make the introduction, and ensure they'll get along.

The Reason Confrontations Occur

As mentioned, both species are predators. When preying upon
other species, they normally chase those that are smaller. This
is the reason you'll typically observe dogs chasing cats. Cats
rarely chase canines due to their size. Realize, however, that
when a dog chases a cat, he does not mean to kill it. While the
prey drive is instinctive, it seldom leads to that end.

Another factor that can trigger a confrontation is that both
species instinctively protect their respective territories. If
one pet was introduced to your home before the other, he may
consider the home his territory. Hence, the other pet (i.e. the
latecomer) is seen as an usurper.

With the above in mind, we'll now explore how to bring the two
pets under a single household, and prevent fights.

How To Establish A Friendship (Or At Least Prevent A Fight)

It's important to establish a few ground rules when introducing
your cat and dog to each other. First, you'll need to work in
stages. Don't simply leave them in the same room together, and
expect them to get along peacefully (remember, they're both
predators at heart).

Second, try to calm both pets before letting them meet each
other. If either is tense, the situation can turn hostile, and
escalate quickly.

Third, take and keep the reins during the entire process. Stay
in control. Your canine and cat may not initially enjoy each
other's company, but they need to know you're in charge at all
times. This will help keep them calm.

Before They Meet Face To Face

Suppose you currently have a canine, and are bringing a new cat
home. Place the cat in a room, and close the door. Then, allow
your dog to roam freely throughout your house. This lets him
know he has free run of "his" territory, even though another
animal is nearby.

Let this continue over a few days. Your two pets will begin to
recognize each other's scent. If, while separated by the door,
they both act calmly, give treats to both pets.

Meeting For The First Time

After a few days have passed, your two pets will have become
accustomed to each other's presence. Let them meet face to face.
Erect a baby gate in the doorway between them. It should be high
enough to discourage your cat from climbing (he's unlikely to
want to since your canine is on the other side).

If possible, have a friend hold one pet a few feet away from
the gate while you do the same for the other. Assuming both pets
act calmly when facing each other, provide treats to both so
they'll associate the other's company with something they enjoy.
Then, allow them to move a little closer to their respective
sides of the gate. Make sure you and your friend maintain
control of both pets.

Coexisting Peacefully

As long as your dog and cat have remained calm during the "gate
phase," place them in the same room with your dog on a leash.
Then, keep them separated. Limit the amount of time they are
exposed to each other, and slowly extend the periods over the
next few days. As each pet grows used to having the other in the
same room, let them come closer to each other. Provide treats
and praise during this process.

Your dog and cat will eventually learn to accept each other
under the same roof. It takes time and patience. Before long,
however, they may even become friends.

How to Make a Simple and Healthy Pasta Sauce
By Ryan Letterman

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Not all of us have the privilege of being Italian. It seems
every Italian has the secret to making a tasty tomato sauce.
Being one myself, of course I have several sauces up my sleeve.
But not everyone has time to spend on a sauce that takes hours
to prepare.

Simmering a sauce to perfection takes time. Time comes to a
standstill while you wait for the sauce to reach the just the
right consistency. But when you're hungry, who has the time to
wait? With a few simple household ingredients, I can teach you
how to make a fresh garden sauce that's takes less than 30
minutes to make.

To make this tasty pasta sauce all you need is four basic
ingredients:

- 1 bunch cherry tomatoes

- 1 small yellow onion

- 1 clove garlic

- 2-3 TBSP olive oil

Start by heating a medium-sized skillet over medium heat.
Drizzle the pan with olive oil and turn the pan about to evenly
coat the bottom. Turn down the heat under the skillet a bit.
While the olive oil is slowly heating, cut up your vegetables.

Grab the cherry tomatoes and a cutting board. Slice the
tomatoes into quarters and set them aside. Don't squeeze out any
of the seeds or extra juices. This is going to add a lot of
flavor and nutrition to your sauce.

Dice up the onion. Now your olive oil should be the right
temperature to add the tomatoes and onions. Be sure the pan is
not so hot that it burns the onions.

Grab a hold of the largest clove of garlic you can lay your
hands on. If you have no garlic, a few sprinkles of garlic
powder will suffice, though it really isn't as good as the real
thing. If you did find the garlic, put it on the cutting board
and give it a good press with the flat side of a knife. Mince
the smashed garlic finely and add it to the sauce.

Many other vegetables make a great addition to this fresh
sauce. Zucchini, squash, olives, bell peppers, or even spinach
can really add another dimension to the texture and taste of the
sauce. I use the hot red peppers my grandfather grows. Those
things are dangerously hot, but you can substitute crushed red
pepper flakes out of a jar to stay on the safe side.

Mix up all the vegetables in the frying pan. They need a good
coating of olive oil to cook properly. Now comes the waiting.
Every few minutes, come back and check on your sauce.

The tomatoes take only a few minutes to wilt - wilting takes
place as the juice seeps out. After ten minutes, the onions
will be translucent and the tomatoes amorphous. Once you have
stirred the sauce, always remember to put the lid back on the
skillet. Condensation will keep the liquids from drying up thus
burning the sauce.

Once the onions are tender and it looks like you've got a real
sauce going, remove the lid. Simmer the sauce on medium for a
few minutes to heat up and congeal the parts of the sauce that
are too watery. By the way, never add water to tomato sauce. The
goal is to reduce and thicken the juices.

Now throw your favorite pasta in a huge pot of boiling salted
water, get out the colander and you are almost ready to eat.
Put some parmigiano reggiano cheese on top of the pasta and
sauce and place a slice or two of garlic bread on your plate.
This sauce will definitely bring out the Italiano in you even if
there really isn't any. You will never buy another jar of pasta
sauce.

Antique Silver
By Sarah Manners
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The History of Silver

Century's ago when silversmiths first started working with
silver they discovered that it was far too soft to work with and
had to be assimilated with other, more resilient, base metals
before it could be moulded. It is due to this discovery that
from 1300 BC all silver metals had to be tested to show that
they contained more than 92.5% silver.

This hallmarking system has survived to present day without
much change. It is these hallmarks that provide silver
collectors with their most important identification tool.
Hallmarks are stamped by the Official Assay Offices, together
with the marker’s own mark, so you can identify where, when and
who made the pieces of silver. You can also learn to tell if the
style of the piece is consistent with the date indicated by its
markings. Although this hallmarking system of marking was most
rigorously applied in England, most countries have some form of
identifying marking system. For example Mexico use numbers that
signify the quality of a piece.

Antique Appreciation

An antique is described as being an object which has reached a
certain age and has become a witness of a previous era in human
society. Antiques are usually objects that show a high degree of
craftsmanship and attention to detail and design. In a today’s
society an antique is above all an object whose atypical
construction and age give it a market value superior to similar
objects of recent manufacture. Silver is a valuable commodity
amongst those on the antique scene and despite changing
fashions, old silver pieces remain collectable.

Antique collecting is becoming more popular amongst society as
a whole, where as in the past collecting was thought to be a
hobby enjoyed only by those who enjoyed wealth and a certain
social standing. More and more people are becoming educated in
antiques and are beginning to see pieces of value in their own
homes. Television programming such as BBC's “Cash in the attic”,
“Antiques road show” and “Bargain Hunt” have done wonders in
educating society about all things antique.

Researching Antique Silver

Determining whether your items of silver are valuable or not is
not as hard as it may sound, you could have it professionally
appraised or you could take the time to do some research at your
local library or on the Internet.

There are a number of facts that make your research easier,
particularly the official hallmark and the stamp indicating the
craftsman’s name. They immediately disclose the item in which
the item was made and by whom.

There are a few key items of information that will make your
research easier: what is the marker's mark, the decade in which
the item was crafted and so on. There are many websites
dedicated to antique silver online and you could even enter into
a web discussion with its members who may be able to offer you
some valuable information about your silver collection.

Silver Plating

Silver plated articles also have considerable antiquarian
value. Good pieces can have up to 40 microns of pure silver
electro-plated onto a base metal, usually copper or nickel.
Years of abrasive cleaning may often have worn away some of the
silver plating, but this is looked upon as proof of age and such
items should not be re-plated or they will lose considerable
value. Silver service cutlery is all silver plated, with
traditional patterns like Kings or Queens being very
collectable.

Whilst silver plated pieces have obviously less value than
solid silver, they are often much sort after by collectors.

Silver Collectors

Some silver collectors devote their attention to a specific
pattern while others collect a particular maker, era or item.
The silver you chose to collect does not need to adhere to any
of these specifications – don't be afraid to mix and match. When
purchasing silver, signs of use do not always detract from value
and damage may or may not. In fact slight damage on a rare piece
will not significantly reduce value, if at all.

Be wary of buying tarnished pieces as it can easily be hiding
wear, damage or repair. Ask yourself why someone selling such
items has not cleaned them to show them at their best. So
inspect tarnished items with particular care.

Having a monogram on an item will often detract from its price.
This is much more common on silver plated rather than solid
silver pieces. Sometimes attempts have been made to remove
monograms, damaging them as well as lowering their value.

Make sure that you are educated enough to be able to spot
repairs that have been made to items as well as forgeries that
do crop up at less reputable markets or websites.

Caring for your Silver

Looking after antiques is the most important part in owning
them. They need to be taken care of properly to ensure that they
remain valuable, attractive and collectable. Whether your silver
is modern or antique it is very important to take proper care of
it as it's value and beauty are prized. Always maintain your
silver with a non-abrasive cleaner. Every time you buff and
polish you remove a fine layer.

Over the years such treatment removes hallmarks and eventually
removes the silver plated surface. Museums use an electrolytic
process which is quite harmless. These are available for
domestic use and remove tarnish in seconds.Tarnishing
(oxidisation) occurs when silver is exposed to the air. Items
that are not for display like cutlery can be kept airtight in a
drawer wrapped in a cloth - otherwise they will need cleaning
each time you use them.

Storing Silver

When storing silver the best way to keep it safe from harmful
sulphur in the air is to seal it in an air tight container. This
said it is not always practical to store your pieces in such
containers. In cases like this a sachet containing activated
charcoal can help to reduce tarnishing significantly.

Activated charcoal is effectively an air scrubber which removes
pollutants like sulphur from the air around your silver. It is
also a good idea to keep a bag of activated charcoal in your
display cases or jewelry box. Charcoal can only absorb a certain
amount of sulphur before it becomes ineffective so sachets must
be replaced at least once a year.

After prolonged storage, your silver will need to be cleaned,
but if stored correctly it will be a far less daunting task.
Don't use ordinary newspaper to wrap the silver or use elastic
bands to bind several pieces together. After a while the rubber
will bond to the silver as the band deteriorates and rots,
leaving a stain, as will newspaper. Instead, use acid-free paper
to wrap items and store where it's not damp.

Appreciating your Silver

To ensure that your items of silver remain in the best possible
condition whether they are antique or modern pieces it is
imperative that they are cleaned and stored correctly. Silver
crafts are valued works of art that should be treasured. Hold on
to pieces of silver and treat them well, it will only add to
their value in later years.

About the Author: Caring for your antiques is the most
important part in owning them but this doesn't need to be as
hard as it sounds. The Qwicksilver company
http://www.qwicksilver.co.uk have patented a non-abrasive
electrolytic cleaning plate that quickly removes tarnish under
water in your sink. They also offer advice on proper care of
your antiques.
